As part of our commitment to be the leading managing agent in green space management we took BNG on the road and held some regional training days during the year.
In force from February 2024, Biodiversity Net Gain is one of the biggest changes to legislation for housing developments since records began. It is now mandatory in England, under Schedule 7A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as inserted by Schedule 14 of the Environment Act 2021) that developers must deliver a BNG of at least 10%. This means a development will result in more or better-quality natural habitat than there was before development.
As an agent with a portfolio of over 100,000 units and multiple client relationships across the country we wanted to bring stakeholders together to hear from some of the leading forces in BNG. We have been lucky enough to work with Future Homes Hub in helping developers with guidance, information and tools to implement BNG successfully. Providing these roadshows has been key in ensuring that all parties on the BNG journey are working together to make the journey as seamless as possible.
Over two venues we have hosted nearly 100 housebuilders and stakeholders. Our thanks go to the guest speakers so far;
- Neil Beamsley – Bellway Homes
- Chris Scott – Biofarm
- Adam Ralph – Fieldworks
- Shruti Trivedi – Devello Group
- Richard Lankshear – Future Homes Hub
So far, we have discussed a range of topics from off site mitigation, long term stewardship and the importance of the housebuilder delivering expected standards at handover. Future Homes took us through the group objectives and Shruti focused on the changes to the planning National Planning Policy Framework. BNG is all about protecting the environment for future generations, as a managing agent with a strong placemaking strategy we finished our roadshow days with some great examples of how we use the spaces housebuilders provide to engage the community.
We are now a year in and about to embark on our biggest event yet at UKReiff. Our focus shall be on our learnings from the past year through Future Homes Hub. Rob Biddlecombe from Mills & Reeve shall be talking about legal liabilities and how non–compliance or failure to deliver the requirement can potentially lead to significant legal, financial and reputational consequences. Michael Oxford from CIEEM shall be discussing ‘The Green Thread’ and Helen Nyul from Barratt developments shall concentrate on BNG on a development site but with a construction and long-term management focus.
